Trailblazer: Dorian Wright
This Tuesday's Trailblazer is Power Yoga Hawaii cofounder, Dorian Wright. With a practice that expands over thirty years, he's well versed in the many different aspects of yoga from the variety of different poses to the deeper practice of meditation. He taught in some of California’s most pristine gyms to some of the smaller more intimate studios and has worked with a wide variety of students, from the perfectly healthy, chronically sick, pregnant, professional athlete, and many more. Trained under world-renowned power yoga teacher Brian Kest, Dorian's strengths shine in both large classes and privates.
WL: What aspects of yoga / meditation / spirituality do you bring into your work?
DW: I bring in a strong practice of asana but remind people everyday that the main goal is meditation. The body is only a temporary investment but the soul is permanent.
WL: How did you get involved with yoga?
DW: My dad was introduced to yoga through George Harrison, when he would play on George Harrison records and vice-versa. Two of their big hit songs were songs about yoga - "My Sweet Lord" and "Dreamweaver". My dad started introducing meditation to me when I was six-years-old. It was challenging for me to meditate as a youth but when I hit 18, I finally understood the purpose of it all. I was confirmed Kriyabon at 22 and this is the style of meditation I practice daily.
WL: What's your favorite pose?
DW: Padmasana. Because it's the most important pose and the spine is the straightest when in this pose. It's a pose masters for thousands of years have been in when they've reached Samadhi.
WL: What's feeding your wanderlust today?
DW: Wanderlust is an amazing gathering of yogis and yoginis and great teachers. Every time I go, I leave floating enjoying bliss.
WL: If you could leave one legacy for your community what would it be?
DW: The importance of daily meditation.
