Trailblazer: Ben Sollee
Known for his thrilling cello playing that incorporates new techniques to create a unique mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B, Ben Sollee possesses rough, smooth, smoky vocal stylings and a knack for intricate arrangements. Sollee shares himself completely with his audience, whether it be by personal lyrics, or his commitment to the environment. We are so psyched to see him perform at Wanderlust Austin and feature him as our Trailblazer in the interview below!
WJ: What aspects of yoga / meditation / spirituality do you bring into your work?
BS: In contrast to my classical training, I like the idea that we all have our own practice and needs. Everyday is an opportunity to listen to what my body needs and grow its abilities.
WJ: How did you get involved with the yoga community?
BS: A few yoga teachers mentioned that they were using my music in their classes and invited me to take part. Once I started attending I was hooked.
WJ: What's your favorite pose?
BS: As a cellist, the wheel pose is awfully satisfying because it folds my body inversely from cello playing position. Love it!
WJ: What's feeding your wanderlust today?
BS: Stories. There are so many folks out there with unique and interesting experiences that I want to help share through song and art.
WJ: If you could leave one legacy for your community what would it be?
BS: Affection. My favorite writer, Wendell Berry, convinced me that to know a place intimately is to have affection for it. Once you have that, there’s a always a reason to protect and build community.
