Friday In Music + Dance: Andrew Bird

Posted by on 1/21/11 in Uncategorized

Since age four, Chicago-based songwriter / performer Andrew Bird has been playing music ranging from classical to early country blues, but has spent the past 13 years writing pop music infused with unconventional violin, glockenspiel, guitar, and his trademark whistling. He's released 11 albums, most recently the widely lauded Noble Beast(2009) which has won praise from Esquire, the New York Times Magazine, and NPR, among others. Amazon.com recently named Bird's Mysterious Production of Eggs, including original artwork by print artist Jay Ryan, one of the "100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time."

What is interesting about Andrew Bird is his effective use of loops. When closing your eyes and listening to one of his records you may think, 'there MUST be a full band behind him', but what makes the magic is his art of loops.

Most of Andrew's equipment went missing before his show, so he played an all acoustic set with instruments contributed by Kaki King, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene and others. This is the "Water Jet Cilice" which he is looping each particular part. Check it out and see if you can catch each loop as he goes along. What begins as a simple whistle and strum becomes a beautifully composed piece.
