Follow Your Sun Salutation with Avocado

People love yoga for many reasons, and for many it creates a deeper connection to their minds, bodies and souls. A true connectedness also involves what we consume to provide nourishment and energy for our bodies. Many people develop a more acute awareness about what they eat when they begin practicing yoga. Every day we wake up, do our sun salutations and make choices about what to eat. Everyone knows breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is critical to start the day with a nutrient-packed meal to keep you focused and full. There are many healthy ways to enjoy the first meal of the day, whether it is with a tofu-scramble, Greek yogurt or avocado toast. Yes, avocado toast.

Avocados provide a heart-healthy alternative to saturated fats present in butter or cream cheese. You can enhance the flavor of creamy avocados very simply with a pinch of sea salt, olive oil and crushed red pepper. Avocados can also give a dairy-free smoothie extra creaminess. An avocado pineapple smoothie recipe has just three ingredients: avocado, pineapple, and ice, and is surprisingly delicious.

Some people like to add diced avocados to an omelet or slices to a breakfast sandwich for an extra nutritional boost. And others are content eating avocados straight from the skin with a little sea salt. Avocados provide nearly 20 essential vitamins and minerals and contain approximately one gram of fiber per ounce.

Avocados originated in Mexico and are available year-round, so you can enjoy them anytime. Although the fruit (avocados are a fruit!) is best known for delicious guacamole, avocados are versatile and make good food—whether it be breakfast or dinner—better. So tomorrow when you wake up, say Good Morning to Avocados.
