Dr. Ronald Alexander & Shiva Rea: Woodstock to Wanderlust
“Some of the connection between Woodstock and Wanderlust is this wonderful thread, this wonderful core and appreciation of joint spiritual practices and of coming together around the unique energy of the collective, the tribal consciousness, the desire to be at one with each other,” says Dr. Ronald Alexander in this Speakeasy video from Wanderlust Colorado 2012 about the cultural and consciousness shifts that occur from collective celebrations, including music concerts, activism movements and other gatherings. Their lecture, titled “Woodstock to Wanderlust – Festivals & Cultural Shifts of Consciousness,” explored the linkage between Woodstock and Wanderlust, as well as history of enlightening and powerful communities.
They went deeper by discussing the “yoga high,” and compared it to popular drug-induced highs of the Woodstock festivals, referencing video clips of the seminal Woodstock film where this shift in consciousness is explored.
“I think there’s a taboo to say ‘I like to get stoned on yoga’ - I think it’s taboo to say just how powerful our practice can be for us,” Shiva says on the topic.
One of the many powerful Woodstock clips included in this lecture is an intro to Kundalini by teacher Tom Law. Tom says to Woodstock attendees: “Yoga means union, it’s the same energy that drugs give you, it’s the same channel except drugs do it for you and this way you can do it yourself."
Shiva concluded: “The ingredients in this transformation are really quite simple, it’s always the people, the quality of the people, and I definitely do see movers and shakers, and there’s definitely less snobbery and a greater integration. The people, the music, and then of course seeing it as a form of yoga.”

Wanderlust Festival is indebted to Hay House who helped us realize the entire 2012 Speakeasy Lecture Series across all four festivals (Stratton, VT in June 2012; Copper Mountain, CO in July; Squaw Valley, CA in late July; and Whistler, BC, Canada in August). With Hay House's amazing roster of speakers (which you can witness in person at their incredible "I Can Do It" events), it's no wonder that they helped elevate the conversation at Wanderlust's Speakeasy this past summer. We encourage you to stay tuned to the Hay House FB feed to make sure you know the next time one of their authors is speaking near you.
